Choosing to utilize the benefits that you worked so hard to earn is exactly what you should be doing. That’s why we partnered with Purdue University Global to put together this guide, geared towards the military community. Over a third of Purdue Global’s student body is military-affiliated, so they speak your language and understand your needs.

Stick to a schedule

One of the best things about transitioning out of the service is getting your freedom back. You define your schedule and when you choose to work and play. But that can be a slippery slope if you don’t actually hold yourself accountable to that schedule. The platoon sergeant that made sure you were up every morning to brush your teeth is gone and so are the scared privates willing to take on your workload.

You also need to remember that just because the military woke you up at 0500, that doesn’t mean you should sign up for the 0800 class. If you’re more focused after 1000, then talk to your counselor about it. Unlike some of your NCOs, school counselors will work with you to create a true path for success, so be honest with them about what won’t work for you.

Eliminate distractions

With the entire operation now in the comfort of your living room, it’s way too easy to get distracted. But in your defense, how often are you going to be able to see a Coastie shoot at a shark to protect his brothers and sisters?! Countless times and after class, that’s when! During class hours, put your phone in the other room and turn off those Reddit notifications.

Next, do a thorough sweep of your surroundings. Unplug the Xbox, let your roommates or family know your class schedule so they can be quiet, and get to work.

Actively participate

This is not the time for skating while you passively listen to the professor on your headphones. Actively participate in the class and you’ll be rewarded with a deeper understanding of the course. Think of it like a battle drill and your senior leadership is grilling your team on tactics. You don’t want to be the one who wasn’t paying attention. So don’t be that guy now – the consequences are just as dire.

Also, build some classmate camaraderie.

Regardless of which flag you choose to impress your classmates (I recommend the Kilroy Was Here flag), you are now ready to take on the world of online classes. The first, most crucial step is to make sure you’re partnering with a school that provides you with individual support. Purdue University Global has a dedicated team trained to assist service members and their families. They offer programs designed for active duty, can walk you through the VA benefits process, and will assign you your very own advisor who will guide you every step of the way, from your first semester until the day you graduate.

At the end of the day, you know what success looks like; it’s you with a diploma in hand moving on to the next goal.

When you joined the military, I bet you reached out to veterans and service members for advice before signing the dotted line. Purdue University Global has dedicated military advisors on standby ready to answer your questions and help you decide if they’re the right fit for you. Click the link in the description to get in touch with them today and sign up for training that won’t include having your room hurricane’d.
