A U.S. service member assigned to the NATO-led Resolute Support mission was killed in Afghanistan on Thursday, defense officials announced, the seventh American service member to die in combat there this year.

  • The Pentagon has not yet identified the fallen or wounded service members pending next of kin notification. This incident is under investigation.
  • The incident comes one month after Army Command Sgt. Maj. Timothy A. Bolyard was killed in an apparent insider attack in eastern Afghanistan on Sept. 3
  • "We mourn and honor the sacrifice of our service member,” U.S. Forces-Afghanistan commander Gen. Scott Miller said in a statement. “We remain committed.”

This is a developing story and will be updated with new information as it becomes available.
