Right now, there are plenty of companies that are actively seeking candidates for open positions, which means that now is the time to step up your search for a job. While the same basic points should be remembered for job searches throughout the year, such as having a great resume and utilizing the Internet to find open positions, there are some other things that you can do to give yourself the cutting edge over the competition in the job market.

First things first: remember that now is the time to really focus your attention on the job that you want. Virtually every industry is hiring at this time of year, with the sole exception perhaps being education. But keep in mind that flexibility is still a factor in your job search. Make notes of the companies that you’re applying to, and if your job search doesn’t pan out right now, be sure to check in for regular updates on other positions that might be available.

Remember to make yourself open and available as well. Companies are seeking to fill open positions fast, and not returning an important phone call or letting an email sit in your inbox could lead to a wasted opportunity. This is doubly true of a company that expresses further interests and asks for a telephone interview, or even an in-house interview to further discuss your candidacy.

One more thing to keep in mind: March is one of the biggest months for job fairs and expos, so do some research and find out which fairs are coming up in your area. Prepare in advance by learning some basic job fair tips and tricks, and try to hit as many job fairs as you can. Be on the lookout for job fairs that cater specifically to military veterans– these employers are actively looking for workers who have the traits and special skills that you possess.

Above all, don’t get discouraged if you don’t get your foot in the door during this hiring blitz. Sure, there are a lot of companies seeking new employees, but there are plenty of people who realize this and who are working just as hard as you for one of those positions. Take the opportunity to refine your resume, revise your cover letter and interview skills, and to continue doing research on the industries and the companies that interest you the most.
