Shawn VanDiver is a 12-year Navy veteran, faculty at three universities, and serves on several boards focused on human trafficking, national and international security, and emergency management. He attended National University and the Naval Postgraduate School possessing degrees and certificates in Domestic Security Management, Homeland Security and Safety Engineering, and Information Systems Operations. He enjoys cooking, SCUBA diving, and spending time with his 6-year-old aspiring pirate/ninja turtle. He is the Co-Director of the Truman National Security Project San Diego Chapter.

On the morning of Aug. 20, the USS John S. McCain reported a collision with a commercial tanker, the Alnic MC. The incident, which left 10 sailors missing, marks the second collision at sea in for the Navy’s 7th Fleet in just two months, after the USS Fitzgerald struck a merchant vessel in June. It’s also fleet’s fourth major mishap at sea in 2017.
Last night, two destroyers in the Mediterranean Sea fired 59 Tomahawks into Syria as a response to President Bashar Al-Assad’s use of sarin gas munitions on innocent villagers in rebel-held territory on Tuesday. The warships, USS Ross and USS Porter, executed what appears to have been a by-the-numbers strike on al-Shayrat base in the Syrian city of Homs, where this week's chemical strikes are reported to have originated.
Yesterday, President Barack Obama commuted the sentence of Chelsea Manning resulting in a flurry of opinions on social media (myself included). People are split on the decision. Some are saying that Manning is a traitor and a criminal and should serve every second of her 35 year sentence. Others are saying that she might have died in prison under a Trump administration. I think that the truth is somewhere in the middle.
