The US military volleyball championships are coming up, so here are some ‘Top Gun’ GIFs

When these service members aren't racking up kills downrange, they're racking up kills in the sand.

The top volleyballers across the U.S. military will descend on Fort Bragg next month for the Armed Force Volleyball Championship, the winner of which will continue on to the CISM Military World Games in China in October, the Fayetteville Observer reports.

“Military volleyball” obviously conjures up images of the sand party of Top Gun infamy. But despite the Top Gun connectioon, it appears that the Air Force, not the Navy, that appears poised to eke out victories for the third year in a row.

In 2018, both the men's and women's Air Force teams crushed the competition with a 5-1 and 6-0 record, respectively, far outstripping the Army and Navy and repeating their performances from 2017.

The matches will occur at the Ritz Epps Physical Fitness Center at Fort Bragg from March 6-8, and spectators are welcome. The event details are here.

And to be clear: A no-holds-barred volleyball showdown between the armed forces' best and brightest … and the winner goes to China to represent the athletic glory of the United States. This is the stuff all 1980s sports films are made of, and I fucking love it.
