# The trailer just dropped for ‘The Outpost’ — a new movie about one of the bloodiest battles of the Afghan War

The trailer for *The Outpost*, an upcoming military thriller about the Battle of Kamdesh, has finally arrived.

Based on the book of the same name by CNN anchor Jake Tapper, *The Outpost* follows a handful of American soldiers at Combat Outpost Keating, a remote and exposed base in eastern Afghanistan, who repelled a massive attack from more than 300 Taliban fighters on Oct. 3, 2009.

The battle resulted in nearly 150 enemy fighters killed, but it came at a heavy price. Though the base still stood, eight Americans were killed, and 27 were wounded.

Overnight, Bravo Troop, 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment became [one of the most decorated units of the war in Afghanistan](<https://www.militarytimes.com/off-duty/military-culture/2019/10/05/these-two-medal-of-honor-recipients/>). The fighting [resulted in two Medals of Honor](<https://taskandpurpose.com/military-life/medal-of-honor-romesha-carter/>), awarded to Staff Sgt. Clint Romesha and Spc. Ty Carter, as well as 27 Purple Hearts, 37 Army Commendation Medals, and 18 Bronze Stars for valor, and nine Silver Stars, [according to Military.com](<https://www.military.com/daily-news/2013/05/01/battle-for-cop-keating-afghanistan.html>).

Directed by Rod Lurie, an Army veteran himself, *The Outpost* stars Scott Eastwood as Romesha and Caleb Landry Jones as Carter — who also appears in the movie. They are joined by Orlando Bloom (*Lord of The Rings, Pirates of the Carribean*) who plays Capt. Ben Keating.

The screenplay was written by Paul Tamasay and Eric Johnson (*The Fighter*), and the film includes several military veterans, in addition to Carter, in a variety of roles.

"It should be a day that every American knows," *The Outpost's* director, Rod Lurie, [said in a March 4 behind-the-scenes featurette](<https://taskandpurpose.com/culture/the-outpost-trailer-battle-of-kamdesh-movie/>). "It should be part of American history."

*The Outpost* premieres in theaters and On Demand July 3.
