Average pay, housing and subsistence allowances will increase for members of the military in 2020, the Pentagon announced Thursday.

Basic pay will increase 3.1% for the entire force, according to a statement released by the Defense Department. The basic allowance for house will go up an average of 2.8%, while the basic allowance for subsistence will increase .9%, it said.

Military personnel received a 3.4 percent pay increase in 2010.

Enlisted troops will now receive $372.71 per month for the basic allowance for subsistence, which is an increase of $3.32, according to the statement. Officers will get $256.68 per month, which is an increase of $2.29, it said. The specific basic pay rates are expected to be released through an Executive Order shortly, the statement said.

The housing allowance program continues the cost-sharing element that determines out of pocket expenses, according to the statement. In 2020, a typical service member will continue to absorb 5% of the national average housing cost by pay grade, it said.

Out-of-pocket amounts that are incorporated into the program vary by pay grade and dependency status and range from $68 to $148 month, the statement said.
