Memorial Day Festival

Thank you to our guest blogger, Bobbi Pack from

For many of us Memorial Day weekend means a day or two off work and a chance to spend quality time with our family and friends.  However, it’s also a time to honor those who have served and died in our nation’s armed services.

I am always looking for some budget friendly activities to fill up my holiday weekend, but I am on a tight budget so I need some activities that are not going to break the bank.

I came up with a list of fun but cheap Memorial Day activities for you to do with your family and friends.

~ There are always parades on holidays and Memorial Day is one of those holidays.  Find out what kind of parades and celebrations are happening in the city or nearby cities and attend. This will give you a fun and free activity to kick off the Memorial Day weekend and you will be honoring our armed forces in the process.  In the past I have gone to the dollar store and purchased small handheld American Flags for the kiddos we wave at the parade.

~ Plan a backyard BBQ with family and friends! To keep the cost down, make it a pot-luck event where everyone brings a dish to share.  I always do a theme and tell my guests what type of food we are having.  My favorite is a Mexican Fiesta!

~ Pool parties are an awesome activity and I add this to the BBQ.  Everyone loves a pool party and Memorial Day weekend usually means all the pools open up for the season.  I go to the dollar store and purchase water and sand toys and let the kiddos have at it.  I do have a small pool that the kiddos old and young love to play in.

~ Visit a local museum or attraction in your town, many times veterans and active duty military can get in for free or a discount on Memorial Day.  Doing this is educational and super fun.

~ Have you ever done a Welcome Home garden? I love to plant a little garden with the kiddos and then when daddy gets home from a deployment they can show him what they did.  So, why not plant a garden… is so much fun to do this as a family and you your kiddos will see how plants (veggies) grow.  Your grocery budget will go down and then you will have extra money to spend on other things.

~ I love to go look at all the trees and flowers and taking a walk around post or if your town as a river walk is so much fun.  This is a great opportunity to teach the kiddos a little about nature and get some exercise too.

~ Some of my best memories growing up are going camping and fishing with my daddy.  Camping and fishing are inexpensive way to get away from reality for a few days.  Many people do not own a ton of camping gear, so keep the costs down ask around and I am sure you will find a friend who has some you can borrow, or check with your local base MWR for rentals.  This is a great way to save money and have memories that will last a lifetime.

~ I love family movie nights and I always add a carpet picnic to them.  We all write two movies down on a sheet of paper, fold it up and place it in a hat.  Then someone draws one out of the hat and that is how we choose the movie.  We make homemade pizza dough and have a make your own pizza party….The kiddos love this!  Then we place a blanket on the floor and have a carpet picnic while enjoying the movie.
