In my Fresh Prince (Will Smith) voice:
Here it is the groove slightly transformed
Just a bit of a break from the norm
Just a little somethin’ to break the monotony
Of all that hardcore dance that has gotten to be
A little bit out of control it’s cool to dance
But what about the groove that soothes that moves romance
Give me a soft subtle mix
And if ain’t broke then don’t try to fix it
And think of the summers of the past
Adjust the base and let the alpine blast
Pop in my CD and let me run a rhyme
And put your car on cruise and lay back ’cause this is summertime
Oh, wait. Let me focus. This is my jam, though!
This year’s summer has us wondering how the heck we’re going to have some fun. As the country is still practicing social distancing with COVID cases rising, you may need to adjust your regularly scheduled fun this year. That’s right. It’s ok. As military spouses, we learn to adapt. Yep! You got this!
If you’re shaking your head, thinking, “naw! I have no clue how I’m going to have fun this summer”, well I gotcha covered.
Create your own water park – Grab the water hose, get a slip and slide, or make a homemade slip slide. You can also set up a sprinkler in your yard and have an entire obstacle course. You can let the whole family enjoy it or keep it all to yourself. Loads of fun right here!
Camping – If you love the great outdoors and sleeping under the stars, pitch your tent right in your backyard. Some campsites have reopened, so don’t hesitate to check to see if your favorite has. Remember to social distance and wash your hands, though.
Cookouts – Cookouts with family and friends are always the highlight of my summer. Get together with neighbors and plan a neighbor cookout. You can chat with one another from your yard and patio. Since you’re outside, you can talk and laugh…six feet away.
Take a scenic drive – Summer means road trips. Your vacation may be canceled, but that doesn’t mean you can’t plan a scenic drive near you. Do a quick Google search for scenic drives near your current duty station. You may be surprised what pops up.
Go fishing – No worries if you don’t catch anything. Fishing can be a relaxing and great time to get away. Make it a date. Ok, I would make it a date because I’m not putting the bait on the line myself. Just saying. Pack a few snacks, and spend a few hours out with your love. And hey! You might get lucky and catch dinner.
Visit an outdoors farmer market – Visit your local farmers market this summer. You can have some fun, try local yumminess, and support local businesses. Once again…remember to practice social distancing.
Laugh – No matter what you do this summer, laugh. Do things that will bring you joy.
2020 has been different. It’s been a year that many of us will NEVER forget. COVID has my family asking, “what is normal?” But as we enter the summer months, I vow that we will have fun. We may not travel, visit amusement parks, be around extended family and friends like previous years. But we will have FUN.
Some nights we may crack jokes, play games, have a date night on the patio, try a new meal, and trash it cause that crap was N.A.S.T.Y. But regardless, the end goal is to have FUN.
So let me go back to finishing my jam by Fresh Prince. Gotta get my dance on. It’s Summertime!
