Here are the skin care services you can receive from TRICARE

TRICARE provides different services based on your medical needs. As a part of self-care, you will want to keep up on your health. . . and skincare is a major part of that. Whether you have been through an accident of some kind or are worried about skin cancer, here are the skin care services that you can receive from military health insurance.

TRICARE offers dermatological services for the diagnosis and treatment of skin disorders including:

  • Medical acne treatment
  • Photodynamic therapy
  • Photochemotherapy
  • Skin cancer exams. (You need to have a family or personal history of skin cancer, increased occupational or recreational exposure to sunlight or clinical evidence. Make sure to bring up any moles or spots you are concerned about to see if they can be removed.)
  • TRICARE also might cover topical treatment for hypertrophic scarring and keloids from burns, surgical procedures, or traumatic events.

Reconstructive surgery

TRICARE will pay for reconstructive surgery, but only for birth defects, accidental injuries, or surgical trauma. The coverage will happen only under these conditions:

  • Correction of a birth defect
  • Restoration following an accident
  • Disfiguring and extensive scars resulting from neoplastic surgery
  • Reconstructive breast surgery if it is medically necessary
  • Reconstructive breast surgery due to a birth defect
  • Penile implants and testicular prostheses under certain conditions
  • Correction of pectus excavatum
  • Liposuction if it is medically necessary
  • Panniculectomy in conjunction with an abdominal or pelvic surgery if medically necessary

The surgeries will have to be done no later than December 31 of the year following the injury or the trauma. There are exceptions for the time frame, including those for children who are still growing.

If you have TRICARE Prime you will need a referral from your primary care manager for specialty services such as those listed in this post. If you have TRICARE Standard or Extra, you most likely do not need a referral for these types of services becaucse you can make the appointment directly. Please talk to your doctor about if you medically need any of the services listed above.
