We all make choices in life. I chose my soldier. When I did that I chose for love. I didn’t choose (or rather I didn’t know I was choosing) to give up the life that I formerly knew. I had a career. I had aspirations. I had a plan. The day we received our orders to our first duty station I knew that I had just opted into making many tough professional/career oriented choices if this was to be our life.
The cold hard truth is that the military can present itself as a very challenging world for a military spouse who desires a career, and frankly even one who just needs or chooses to supplement his/her family’s income. It’s very easy to get discouraged.
I have met and had the opportunity to discuss this topic with hundreds of military spouses. Spouses with many different backgrounds and education levels and spouses of many different ranks. It always comes down to their story/journey and their choices – from life choices like raising children to daily choices like budgeting. Some military families have to have two full-time career oriented partners. Others choose or are able to support their lifestyle on only their military income. Sometimes, choosing to work full or part time has nothing to do with income at all but rather self-fulfillment.
My journey has led me down a road of full-time employment in my choice career field, to full-time employment anywhere I could find it, to owning my own business and independent contractor work. It works for me but it is/was not always easy and it’s not always the choices I would have made had I not been a military spouse.
Many military families, like mine, are finding that part-time (or independent contractor) work to supplement their family’s military income is just enough for them to reach their financial goals and provide for extra expenses that come up along the way.
So what are these military spouses doing to earn this part-time income? Here’s a list:
