shutterstock_141953989.jpgThanksgiving Day and Veterans Day might be the most notable days in November. This month we also take time to recognize Military Family Month, Military Family Week, and Military Family Day all typically being assigned/celebrated around the third week of November.

Military Family Month was originally established in 1993 by the Armed Services YMCA, and the U.S. Government has been recognizing the occasion every year since. These events are by in large organized and enhanced by military groups and organizations such as the National Military Family Association.

The National Military Family Association (NMFA) is an organization founded by a handful of military wives in 1969.  This means they’re not only supporters of military families – they are military families. The organization speaks up on behalf of military families and empowers husbands, wives, and children to understand and access their benefits. Their mission is to fight for benefits and programs that strengthen and protect uniformed services families and reflect the Nation’s respect for their Service. You may know some of their programs as Operation Purple, Military Spouse Scholarship Program, and National Military Family Award.

NMFA isn’t the only organization supporting Military Family month, but they are an amazing one with much to offer our military families. They are a good “root” resource. From their organization/website you can reach out specifically to other organizations or resources in essentially any area of concern for military families.

In recognition of Military Family Month, there are several organizations and resources that stand ready to help our military families when it comes to financial readiness and they include:

• Defense Finance and Accounting Service – the authority on military finance – has everything military pay.
• Military Money®  – InCharge® Education Foundation developed Military Money® to provide an authoritative financial resource for military families and help ensure the fighting readiness of America’s armed forces by enhancing their financial readiness.
• Military Saves – Part of America Saves, Military Saves is a social marketing initiative to persuade, motivate, and encourage military families to save money every month.
• Financial Peace University, Military Edition – In a small-group format, this nine-lesson DVD course—taught by personal finance expert Dave Ramsey—covers everything from budgeting and paying off debt to retirement and charitable giving.
• Better Business Bureau Military Line – Since 2004, BBB Military Line has provided free resources to our military communities in the areas of financial literacy and consumer protection through the efforts of 112 BBBs across the U.S.
