Bobbi's Kids ChristmasYep…it’s that time again…The Holidays Are Here!!….Woot-Woot!…But, what if you get those cute little things called, “orders” in December…what do you do?…What about presents, a Christmas tree, stockings all hung by the chimney with care and the BIG one…you know Santa…What About Santa? How will Santa visit when you are living in the base hotel!?!

OMG…what are you going to do!?!…Okay, stop freaking out…I had just this happen to me in December of 2010.  My husband received his orders in November taking us from Fort Carson CO to the DLI in Monterey, CA.  The movers were scheduled to pack and load on December 17…and I have to be honest I was a little nervous about this.  My kiddos were nine (9) and six (6) at the time and were scared to death Santa was not going to come this year as we were going to be living in the hotel on base until after December 25th.  I knew I had to make this Christmas the best one yet!…No matter what I had to be the strong one and make my family remember the Christmas we PCSed.

Now, the first thing I did was make a list…and yes I checked it twice.

Bobbi's Puppy Christmas1. Purchase a small tree with lights and ornaments already on it.  Also, make sure the movers do not pack your stockings…add them to the Do Not Pack Room!

2. Make sure all of my gifts were purchased and wrapped prior to pack and load day.

3. Call the local grocery store (in Monterey) and order Christmas dinner in a box. I scheduled this to be picked up December 24th, as the refrigerators in temporary housing are small.

4. Purchase cute Christmas plates, napkins, etc at the local Dollar Store.

5. Google the duty station you are headed to and check out the holiday event calendar…you never know there may be a really cute play, concert, or tree lighting you and your family can attend.

Next, you can always decorate the hotel room with lights, etc.  When I hit the local Dollar Store for plates I purchased a ton of craft supplies and we made homemade Christmas decorations and placed them all over the hotel room.  This was a super fun family activity…and to make it even more fun we ordered pizza and had a carpet picnic while we watched Christmas movies on the laptop.

Bobbi's Gingerbread HouseLast, use the hotel kitchen to make the perfect Christmas meal with the “Christmas dinner in a box” you purchased.  This is the perfect opportunity for you to teach the kiddos about cooking and baking.  If you do not have time to bake those special cookies for Santa on December 24th, you can always purchase some at the Commissary…he wont mind.

Just remember no matter where you are, as long as you have your family together it is the perfect holiday. You can make it special regardless of how much money you spend, or if you eat on the carpet or at a fancy table.
