As I get the kiddos ready to go back to school and my wallet becomes lighter and lighter I begin to wonder what ways could the kids and I still have fun before the 1st day of school…..without making my wallet any lighter.  Well, here in North Carolina it is hot outside way past the 1st day of school so the kiddos and I sat down and came up with a list.  Our list has the top then (10) ways to cool off without spending a fortune.

Even if you live in a state that is not as hot as North Carolina…or maybe hotter you can still use our awesome ideas and have some fun!

Here is our list of the top ten (10) ways to cool off without having to take out a loan

1. Host an ice cream social – Invite your friends, neighbors and family to come celebrate going back to school.  Ask each guest (family) to bring their favorite ice cream topping and their swimsuits.  If you do not have a plastic or blow-up pool use the sprinkler to have some fun! Then make an ice cream bar with all of the toppings your guests brought.  You can get ice cream at the Commissary for great prices…watch for coupons too.

2. Have an ice skating party – Check out the summer ice skating prices at your local ice skating rink.  Many times ice rinks on post will have free learn to skate classes for military families.  This is a great opportunity to learn a new sport, have a blast and Bobbi Free Slidecool off!

3. Have a Slip-And-Slide party – Having a slip-and-slide party is not just for the kiddos…adults can still have a blast taking a ride on a slide!  If you do not already own a slip-and-slide check your local Exchange as they will be closing them out and you can get one for an awesome price.  Also, ask all of your guests to bring a snack to share and if you get a wild hair, you can do a theme…how does a back to school Hawaiian night sound?

4.  Have a movie party – I love movie nights with my family and the best part is we do not spend a fortune.  Get to the local “red box” and rent a movie for one…yes one dollar! Spread out a blanket on the living room floor, pop some pop-corn and have yourself a homemade drive-in movie…and you did not break the bank.  Also, the air conditioning will feel amazing and keep everyone cool.

5. Have a sprinkler party – Invite all of your friends, neighbors and family over for a night full of sprinkler fun! Ask everyone Cooling Off Bobbito bring their favorite water toys and a covered dish to share.  You can pick up hot dogs at your local Commissary for a good price…..and my family loves hot dogs(Click here for deals on hot dogs). Don’t forget about the boom-box to add some music to your party.

6. Have a day “in” at the museum – Check out a local indoor museum.  This not only will keep your family cool, but it’s always fun to check out the history of the town you live in.  Check into pricing as many museums are free for military or have a discounted rate.

7. Hit the local pool – Check into the pricing of the pools on post.  Many times they are free or very cheap.  Load up the car and spend a day at the swimming pool!  Make brown bag lunches for everyone to enjoy and take lots of water so everyone stays hydrated in the heat. (Click here for deals on bottled water)Make sure you pack on the sunscreen and reapply it every hour just to be safe.  (Click here for deals on sunscreen)

8. Have a Library day – Load up the car and take the kiddos to the public Library for some indoor reading fun.  This is a great booksway for the kiddos to get the opportunity to check out the kiddos section and chill out while reading a “cool” book.  Look your local Library up online as they all usually have a kiddos reading hour and/or free Summer craft time.

9. Check out the free events – Many cities have Fun Friday!  This is a free event for everyone and is filled with music and activities for everyone.  Many cities will allow you to bring a cooler filled with soft drinks, juice boxes, water and snacks for the family.  Many times they will end the night with a fireworks show…that is fun!

Campfire10. Go backyard camping – Set-up a tent in the backyard, grill up some hamburgers and hot dogs and head out back to have a family night filled with fun! Be creative with this one and make up fun activities for your family.  You can play board games in the tent, tell silly stories and jokes all while spending quality time with your family.

Cooling off does not have to cost you a fortune, all you need is a little creativity and the chance to look outside of the box a little.  Have a fun idea of how to cool off without breaking the bank? Add it in the comments section below.
