Today's fun facts are all about fall!
1) Pumpkin spice is the spice mix used for pumpkin pies, not made from pumpkins. The spice is made from ground cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves.
2) The lovely colors of fall are caused by pigments in the leaves. Different trees also produce different pigments.
3) Way back when, “Harvest” was used to describe the season between summer and winter. In the 1500s, English speakers started referring to the time as “fall of the leaf” while the time between winter and summer was called “spring of the leaf.” The terms “fall” and “spring” are said to be from these phrases however the English ended up adopting the word Autumn while in North America they started using the word “fall.”
4) Apples are another staple of fall. The most popular varieties are Red Delicious, Granny Smith, Fuji, Gala, and Golden Delicious.
