Air Force officials are investigating the death of a man near the north gate of the U.S. Air Force Academy on Saturday night after the NHL Stadium Series hockey game between the Avalanche and the Los Angeles Kings, military officials said Sunday.
The man wasn't affiliated with the academy or the Department of Defense, officials said, declining to reveal his identity.
He was one of the more than 43,000 hockey fans visiting the academy for the event in Falcon Stadium, according to a statement that academy officials issued Sunday. He died as academy officials were routing traffic off base as the result of “a tragic incident,” according to the statement. Traffic was diverted to allow emergency response crews to reach the scene.
The El Paso County Sheriff is not investigating the death, an agency spokeswoman.
Academy officials declined to provide more information. They said, “We are devastated by the event and send the deepest condolences to his loved ones.”
