Air defense artillery soldiers who successfully engage at least five hostile targets in a combat zone could get a new skill badge, Task & Purpose has confirmed.

Details of the new badge were included in a copy of an Army PowerPoint slide that was circulated on social media. An Army official said the information included on the slide was “pre-decisional” but confirmed that the badge was in the works.

Based on the Army slide, soldiers would need to have five or more “successful hostile engagements in an operational environment” to earn it. Eligibility could apply to soldiers as far back as 2022.

“The Army is currently staffing the establishment of a new Air Defense Artillery badge to recognize soldiers' tactical and technical mastery. Design, eligibility criteria, and implementation guidance are currently under review and will be formally published to all commands once finalized,” Maj. Travis Shaw, an Army spokesman, said in a statement.

The Army slide showed that the badge’s proposed gold wreath design is inspired by the Army Air Corps’ “flying ace” history, which were monikers given to [World War II pilots who intercepted enemy aircraft in combat](<https://airandspace.si.edu/stories/editorial/what-did-it-mean-be-flying-ace>).

In recent years, the Army has referred to a [handful of soldiers who have shot down five or more enemy drones as “aces.”](<https://taskandpurpose.com/news/10th-mountain-division-aces-drones.md>) A 10th Mountain Division infantry soldier even became known as the [“Ace of Syria”](<https://taskandpurpose.com/news/soldier-ace-syria-drone-kills.md>) after his fifth one-way attack drone kill while he was deployed to a forward operating base in northeastern Syria.

[Skill badges](<https://taskandpurpose.com/culture/army-skill-badges.md>) are official military decorations that soldiers wear on their uniform to recognize a specific technical or tactical achievement. The Army breaks its skill badges up into six groups based on their precedence and how they are worn on service and dress uniforms.

The slide indicates that the badge could be classified as a “Group 4” special skill badge, which is the same category as parachutist, military freefall parachutist, air assault, diver badges, and space badges, according to [Army uniform regulations](<https://armypubs.army.mil/epubs/DR_pubs/DR_a/ARN30948-PAM_670-1-000-WEB-1.pdf>).
