Army officials have identified a soldier who died after being injured on the rifle range at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, as Pvt. James Noel Zamora.

Zamora, 18, was taking part in basic combat training when he was killed on Nov. 5, according to a message on Fort Jackson’s Facebook page.

“The command conducted a 36-hour training stand down to attend to the needs of the soldiers and cadre, and to evaluate all procedures,” the message says. “Trainees across Fort Jackson also had the opportunity yesterday to call home and assure families of their safety.”

Investigators are looking into the circumstances of Zamora’s death, the message says.

Little information was immediately available about the incident on the rifle range, but officials have determined that the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was not a factor in Zamora’s death, according to the message.

At the time of his death, Zamora was assigned to to Company D, 3rd Battalion, 34th Infantry Regiment.

Two other soldiers have died at Fort Jackson this year, according to media reports: Pvt. Angel Cortes, 29; and Pvt. Connor J. McGurran, 18.

“Our hearts are heavy for Pvt. Zamora’s family, the soldiers in his unit, and all the family members affected by the loss of James,” Fort Jackson commander Brig. Gen. Milford H. Beagle, Jr. said in a statement. “At this difficult time, we have chaplains, grief counselors, and other medical professionals providing comfort and assistance to those involved.”
