Eddie Ray Routh, the Marine veteran who killed famed Navy SEAL Chris Kyle and friend Chad Littlefield at a rifle range, Feb. 2, 2013, was convicted Feb. 24 of first-degree murder. The case has drawn national interest as it follows the release of the critically acclaimed film “American Sniper,” which was based on Kyle’s memoir by the same name.
The trial focused on whether or not Routh should be held accountable for his actions in light of his diagnosis of psychosis, schizophrenia, and other mental illnesses. Routh’s lawyers argued that he should not be found guilty of first-degree murder due to his mental illnesses.
Speaking outside of the Erath County District Court in Stephenville, Texas, Judy Littlefield addressed the press, saying: “We’re so thrilled that we have the verdict that we have tonight.”
