RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. — A gunman shot and wounded an employee of the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center on Wednesday night, authorities said.

The employee was in stable condition Wednesday night at a hospital, said Mary Kay Rutan, a medical center spokeswoman. The medical center did not identify the employee or specify his or her job Wednesday night.

The shooting took place at about 6:20 p.m. No one else was harmed and the suspect is in law enforcement custody, Rutan said. Authorities also did not identify the suspect.

The FBI will investigate the shooting at the medical center, at Blue Heron Boulevard and Military Trail. Rutan said the center “is secure and will remain operational for scheduled appointments and procedures” Thursday.

Authorities released few other details of the shooting late Wednesday. WPTV-TV, the Palm Beach Post's news partner, reported that the incident took place in or near the medical center's emergency room.

The towering 270-bed medical center opened in June 1995 and serves thousands of veterans in Palm Beach County, the Treasure Coast and Glades-area counties.
