Fort Jackson soldier dies while preparing for training drill, officials say

An 18-year-old Army recruit at Fort Jackson died following a “medical emergency” before a training drill, according to an officials with the base.

Friday, the solider-in-training showed distress while preparing to do outdoor physical training with his battalion, Fort Jackson spokesperson Patrick Jones said in a statement.

A statement by Fort Jackson Commander Brig. Gen. Milford H. Beagle, Jr. said the solider “experienced a medical emergency.”

When the recruit showed signs of distress, Fort Jackson medical personnel immediately transported the soldier to Providence Hospital. He was pronounced dead shortly after 8:30 p.m.

Hospital staff said the death was not heat related, according to Jones.

Separate investigations will take place to determine to determine the cause of death and the facts behind the incident, officials said.

The soldier's name is being withheld while officials are notifying the next-of-kin. Beagle's statement said the solider was from central North Carolina.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our own. Our hearts and prayers are with the family members and team mates of the deceased soldier. We are providing every comfort and assistance that we can to all involved,” Beagle said Saturday afternoon.
