# Leaked New Army Regs Reveal Sweeping Changes To Tattoos

A leaked copy of the Army's uniform and appearance regulation, AR 670-1, posted to Facebook and [obtained by the Army Times](<https://www.armytimes.com/article/20140320/NEWS/303200060>), reveal sweeping changes to the Army's policy regarding tattoos.

Among the changes:

- Tattoos are no longer permitted on the face, head, neck, or hands.
- Any tattoos above the neckline, below the elbows, or below the knees must be approved and annotated by commanders.
- Sleeve tattoos are banned on the arms and legs.
- Soldiers may have just four tattoos below the elbow or the knee. These tattoos must be able to be covered by the wearer’s hand.
- Commanders will also conduct an annual inspections of their soldiers for prohibited tattoos.
