A Russian soldier opened fire on his fellow colleagues at an army base Friday, killing eight and injuring two more, the country's military investigation department said.
Private Ramil Shamsutdinov orchestrated the attack as night fell at military unit 54160 in Gorny, fatally shooting a pair of officers and six serviceman, according to the Investigative Committee of Russia.
Two others sustained serious injuries in the onslaught at the base in southeast Russia, the agency said in a statement.
Criminal proceedings were launched against Shamsutdinov, and he was detained, the investigative authority said. The agency said an investigation is ongoing.
A year of military service is mandatory for Russian men between the ages of 18 and 27.
Shootings were a big problem the Russian military in the 1990s and early 2000s but have decreased in recent years, as troop morale has improved.
