Pentagon press secretary Adm. John Kirby will be stepping down from the position at the request of Ashton Carter, the newly sworn in secretary of defense. Kirby has been the press secretary for the past year and is considered reliable and trustworthy by the White House and press alike.

The change is due to Carter’s reservations over a uniformed officer being the representative of the Defense Department in its routine dealings with the media, the New York Times reports. Instead, the secretary wants a civilian in the role, but as of yet no one has been named.
