Senator Claims Pentagon Withholding Data On Sex Crimes In Military Communities

In a report released May 4 by the office of Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, the senator asserts that the number of sex-related crimes occurring in military communities is greater than the Department of Defense lets on because it fails to account for civilian victims, such as military spouses or civilian employees.


Gillibrand says these victims “remain in the shadows” because they are not counted in surveys conducted by DoD, even though female civilians were the victims in more than half of the 107 sexual assault cases that she reviewed.
