A U.S. service member was killed and another wounded on Monday during a combat operation in eastern Afghanistan, defense officials announced.

  • The Pentagon has not yet identified the fallen or wounded service members pending next of kin notification. The wounded service member is in stable condition and is being treated at Bagram Airfield’s hospital, according to U.S. Forces-Afghanistan
  • Several members of the Afghan security forces were also killed and wounded in the operation, a news release from U.S Forces-Afghanistan says.
  • “My thoughts and those of U.S. Forces-Afghanistan are with the families and friends of our fallen and wounded service members,” Army Gen. John Nicholson, who leads U.S. and coalition troops in Afghanistan, said in a statement. “Their valiancy in battle, and that of the brave Afghan partners they fought alongside, will endure in our hearts and history.”
  • Eastern Afghanistan is home to the Afghan branch of ISIS, which has claimed responsibility for recent suicide attacks in Kabul that have killed scores of civilians.
