Military Fitness Standards Need To Be Revamped

Given the Army and Marine Corps’ focus on ground combat, their physical fitness goals are nothing short of ambitious, and their new programs — the Marines’ High Intensity Tactical Training and the Army’s revised FM 7-22 doctrine — are raising the bar.

According to Frank Palkoska, who is in charge of the U.S Army’s Physical Fitness Training School, weight loss and strength training are the “short poles in the tent” in terms of fitness. The real goal — and the real challenge — is to undo a lifetime of bad habits and instill in soldiers and Marines the appropriate levels of coordination and high motor function.

Simply put, today’s youth aren’t developing the physical agility, elasticity, and coordination necessary for the rigors of combat early in life, and so must relearn the basics.
