The Army is looking for a few good guns. Actually, it just needs one, and it needs to be highly customizable. The Army Contracting Command released a solicitation on Aug. 28 for a new Modular Handgun System to replace the service’s M9. The Army wants a pistol that can be adjusted with different sized grips, and fit multiple attachments like laser sights and flashlights.

The deadline for submissions is Jan. 28, and the program is valued at just more than $580 million. The competition will be open caliber, which means that rounds larger than 9mm can also be used, and each manufacturer can submit two pistol and ammo combinations.
