The Military To Get A Major Redesign From The Ground Up

When Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter was tapped for his current post, he quickly announced his solution for the military’s retention and recruitment problem, as well as his vision for a more modern-looking military. Acting Under Secretary of Defense Brad Carson lays out what that future military will look like and how the Pentagon intends to manage for talent, not just time served.

Some innovative solutions include:

A talent-based branch selection mechanism at West Point that quantifies the quality of young cadets and matches them to specific professional niches according to skill, learning ability, and behavior, rather than class rank.

A rapid innovation cell sponsored by Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert, in order to empower the best young minds in the Navy to think of new ways to market and recruit talent, propelled by social networks.

The creation of a new career path tool, called MyVector, which would serve as a one-stop IT tool for mentorship and career development for all ranks, led by Air Force Secretary Deborah James.
