In an effort to close maintain the integrity of their assisted living services and similar benefits for low-income wartime veterans, the Department of Veterans Affairs might end up hurting the very people it set out to help. The proposal is meant to close a loophole that allowed veterans to transfer assets in order to meet the financial requirements for assisted living benefits.

The change would introduce a look-back provision, wherein the VA would deny benefits for up to 10 years to any veteran who transferred assets within three years on the assumption that it was done to meet income requirements, reports the Trib Live.
