Why Decades Later, Many Veterans Still Hate Jane Fonda

Jane Fonda may be a relatively unknown name to post-9/11 veterans, except for those who have spent any time with older family friends or relatives who served in Vietnam. In that case, you probably know her quite well.

The daughter of a known actor, and a celebrity in her own right, Fonda was also an avid supporter of the anti-war movement. While in Paris in 1972 for peace talks, she was invited to Hanoi by the North Vietnamese delegation and it was there that she went from slightly famous, to downright infamous — especially among the veteran community —when she sat down on an anti-aircraft gun alongside North Vietnamese soldiers for a photo shoot. It was at that moment that her legacy as Hanoi Jane was forged, and 43 years later, it lingers.
