Netflix/"Sand Castle"

Chris Roessner, the Army vet who turned his Iraq experiences into the controversial Netflix film Sand Castle, wants you to lay off all that talk of lazy, entitled, awful Millennials. In fact, Roessner believes, your “support the troops” talk is pointless if you’re trashing the generation that’s actually doing the fighting.

Every soldier’s Iraq War experience is different. Some hated every minute they were deployed; others never wanted to leave. Some questioned their reason for being there; others were convinced they were fighting the good fight. Some sympathized with the locals; others saw them only as the enemy. But regardless of how they felt about the war, most soldiers agreed that the situation on the ground was far more complicated than what politicians on both sides of the aisle made it out to be.

Army veteran Chris Roessner returned home from Iraq in 2004 and spent the next 10 years writing and pitching a film based on his experiences at war. Now, that film, “Sand Castle,” is set to premiere on Netflix in April. Judging from the trailer, Roessner’s Iraq deployment was pretty awful. The film, however, looks great.
