Skelton: “Over 1,000 veterans (that have served a tour in Iraq or Afghanistan) have e-mailed me since Tom Ricks posted my FB article on his blog last Nov. stating that the only time they ever felt like committing suicide was from the stress of going through a medical board or the process of transition out of the military.”

There is a statistic that has been widely quoted in the veteran community that highlights an estimated 22 veterans a day are committing suicide. It is a deeply troubling statistic and has galvanized the veteran movement, both from inside the military and veteran communities, and externally, to bring about a wide range of programming nationwide. The statistic, however, is widely misunderstood.

With over 300,000 members, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America is the largest organization for former military members who have served since the September 11 attacks. Because of a dearth of accurate data regarding veterans’ concerns, IAVA launched a member survey back in 2012 asking about issues ranging from mental health care to the GI Bill.
