Over the weekend, while reading a new history of the Viking raids on early medieval England, I was struck by the awful thought that today’s America might be like England and that Trump might be the Vikings.

That is, the Scandinavian raiders were crass, violent, illiterate pagans. But they also were “fast-moving . . . playing by a new set of rules and uncaring of retribution.”

What if Trump has figured out how today’s America really works, and people like me, who call for obeying the Constitution and upholding the rule of law, are simply outmoded, like the East Anglians of the time?
