Retirement doesn’t always mean slowing down — especially for veterans. After years of service, many are looking for new ways to stay active, connected, and purposeful. But as they age, navigating healthcare and support systems can become more complex, particularly when balancing VA benefits with Medicare options.

Nearly half of all U.S. veterans are now 65 or older. As this population grows, so does the need for healthcare solutions that honor their service and meet their evolving needs — from chronic conditions to emotional well-being and social support.

No veteran should face these challenges alone. That’s why having a community of people and organizations who understand the unique needs of veterans and their families is critical.

That’s where Humana and USAA step in — two companies with deep roots in the military community and a shared mission to support veterans’ well-being. From managing healthcare coverage to coping with the lasting effects of service, the right support matters.

Two Forces, One Purpose

USAA has served the military community for more than a century, helping millions of service members and their families safeguard their financial and physical well-being. Humana shares that same commitment through educational programs and relationships with Veterans Service Organizations dedicated to improving healthcare access and quality of life for veterans.

This collaboration becomes even more meaningful during the Medicare Advantage Annual Election Period, which runs through Dec. 7. It’s a time when veterans consider their healthcare coverage options for the year ahead. Together, Humana and USAA are helping make that decision-making process easier to navigate, ensuring veterans understand how their choices can strengthen both their health and independence.

Through an exclusive partnership, Humana and USAA have developed the Humana USAA Honor Giveback and Humana USAA Honor Giveback with Rx plans. While available to anyone eligible for Medicare, these plans are designed with veterans in mind. They include a Part B giveback, a benefit that adds money back in the beneficiary’s Social Security check for the Part B premium, as well as a $0 monthly plan premium, $0 copay for in-network primary care visits, and dental, vision and hearing coverage. New in 2026, every Humana USAA Honor Giveback plan features a $0 copay for in-network mental health services, including therapy and specialist visits, both virtually and in-person.

Filling the Gaps

Some veterans may wonder whether they need a Medicare Advantage plan and Department ofVeterans Affairs(VA) benefits.

While VA benefits remain a cornerstone of veteran healthcare, many veterans still need broader access and flexibility in their coverage. That’s where Medicare Advantage plans can help. In fact, VA encourages eligible individuals to enroll in Medicare even when they receive VA healthcare benefits.

MA plans may be able to help when VA care isn’t available or practical. They offer:

  • Access to a wide network of doctors, pharmacies and hospitals
  • Flexibility and convenience to see providers closer to home
  • Potentially shorter wait times
  • Coverage when traveling

“Every veteran’s health journey looks a little different, so it’s important that there are coverage options that help veterans access care where and when they need it, while also ensuring that they feel supported with their physical and emotional health,” said Michael Jones, a broker relations manager with Humana and a U.S. Army veteran.

Assisting Veterans Beyond Benefits

The Humana and USAA partnership goes beyond paperwork.

Humana Customer Care specialists receive special training to help veterans navigate their benefits. They guide veterans on which plans best support their lifestyle and how to use Medicare coverage when they also have VA coverage.

“Veterans deserve partners who truly understand their needs,” said Mary Forey, AVP of Health Solutions at USAA. “Together with Humana, we provide veterans trusted guidance to support their overall health not only for today, but for tomorrow as well.”

A Community of Care

Humana and USAA share a mission to make sure veterans have the care, connections and compassion they deserve long after their service ends. Through ongoing collaboration, they’re helping veterans age with support tailored to their distinct needs — provided by those who understand what it means to serve.
