A U.S. service member was killed and two others wounded on Saturday during an apparent insider attack in southern Afghanistan, defense officials announced.

  • The wounded services member are currently stable condition and receiving treatment from medical personnel, NATO’s Resolute Support said in a statement.
  • The Pentagon has not yet identified the fallen or wounded service members pending next of kin notification.
  • The last insider attack on NATO forces happened in August 2017, when a Romanian soldier was injured, according to Operation Resolute Support. The Taliban claimed in January 2018 that its infiltrators had wounded a U.S. service member, but the incident is officially classified as an insurgent attack.
  • A year earlier, a green-on-blue attack claimed the lives of three U.S. service members in eastern Afghanistan on June 11, 2017. Within a week, a second such attack wounded seven U.S. troops

This is a developing story and will be updated with more information as it becomes available.
