For the first time in its nearly 100-year history, the American Legion will appoint a woman executive director, a representative confirmed.

Verna L. Jones, an Army veteran who served as a personnel sergeant, is an attorney who has testified before Congress numerous times as director of the Legion's veterans' affairs and rehabilitation division in Washington.

A formal announcement of the appointment is expected next week.
