In an effort to provide American troops with a battlefield edge, the Pentagon is aiming to pair soldiers with machines. This plan, called the “third offset” strategy, will invest in new technology meant to neutralize the technological advancements of other nations or enemies.
Deputy Defense Secretary Robert Work, who is leading the offset project for the Pentagon, said during the Reagan National Defense Forum, “This third offset … is really focused on the advanced capabilities that Russia and China can bring to bear.” He added that humans and machines are already working together, and this method is meant to create short-term deterrence.
“The way we will go after human-machine collaboration is allowing the machine to help humans make better decisions, faster,” Work said.
