In case you hadn’t hear (and there’s no way you haven’t heard) it’s the U.S. Marine Corps’ 248th birthday.

Almost 2.5 centuries of military history started in the Corps’ birthplace, Tun’s Tavern, on November 10, 1775. The Marine Corps was established to augment naval forces in the Revolutionary War. Capt. Samuel Nicholas recruited Marines straight out of the Tun Tavern on Water Street in Philadelphia.

The Corps was deactivated following the close of the Revolutionary War but was reactivated under the U.S. Navy on  July 11, 1798. From Iwo Jima to Da Nang to Fallujah, Marines have earned their nickname of ‘Devil Dogs’ in every war since their creation. We know this is a special day for the Marines, so here are 10 of the best Marine Corps birthday memes.

The storm that is the Marine Corps’ birthday is here.

Ten days, everyone, ten days. A lot of us love celebrating birthdays, but Marines take it to a whole different level. So, if you don’t want to partake in the fun, just get used to the idea Marines all around the world will be shouting from the mountain tops, or in this case, a future Marine with a brass instrument making sure his neighborhood crush knows what’s up.

Support your Marine brothers and sisters and partake in the celebration.

It’s the Marine Corps birthday, but all you other veterans better not pretend you don’t love the back-to-back holidays. Whether you are hungover on Veterans Day or not, wish your Semper Fi brothers and sisters a happy birthday and celebrate together come Veterans Day. But today is about the Marines and their birthday.

Brace yourself

As soon as the temperature starts to dip in the early November days, that looming thought lurks on the edge of everyone’s memories: Marine birthday posts. There isn’t any other military branch or unit that celebrates their formation as proudly (and loudly) as the Marines. So every year that Nov. 10 approaches, the posts from the Devil Dog community explodes onto every social media platform out there.

Born in a tavern, fights like hell. Marines are kind of a big deal.

Reddit user “u/fucovid2020” dropped this important announcement on the r/USMC channel. If you haven’t figured it out yet or your friend who’s a Marine hasn’t said it enough, it’s the gosh dang Marine Corps birthday, and it’s kind of a big deal.

Do you even Marine, Bro?

Reddit user u/macjr82 dropped this “Do you even Marine, Bro?” in the r/USMC channel. It’s funny because it’s true. Also, Halloween at No. 2 really nails the Havelock-in-Autumn vibe.

You know that crazy cousin? In the military, that’s the Marines.

Whether it’s drunken brawling downtown near Camp Pendelton or it’s the buddy trying to get you to go bungee jumping, Marines are wild at heart. They have proven their creative solutions for combat all the way back to the Revolutionary War.

When Semper Fidelis flows through your veins, crazy stuff can happen. So when you see your Marine neighbor building a Viking warship in his backyard, encourage him with a six-pack of beer and wish him a happy Devil Dog birthday. Don’t ask any questions, or you’ll be force-fed Marine Corps history.

Oh yes, we didn’t forget who the Marines report to.

We know that the Navy secretly loves the USMC birthday, because they get to remind the Marines in their life how the office org chart look. Thank you, ifunny.co, for this lovely meme.

Unsuspecting non-veterans today

‘Why are you so intense?’ some may ask. If you haven’t figured it out yet, here’s your clue: you cannot avoid hearing about the Marine Corps’ 248th birthday. Just let them get it out of their system so we can all enjoy Veterans Day together.

There’s always a salty non-Marine veteran who doesn’t get it.

It happens every year in the comments section or after the sun goes down, and people at the pub have had a few too many. Someone will say something like, ‘I don’t get it,’ and some barrel-chested freedom fighter of a Marine will make sure they know that it’s the Marine Corps birthday, and they need to show respect, damn it!

Maybe you’ve been there, maybe not. Don’t judge.

It should go without saying, but veterans love to have fun (for the most part), and you have two back-to-back holidays. But, thanks to all veterans, the Marines get at least a three-day weekend because Veterans Day is a federal holiday. Now, puke and rally, grab a greasy breakfast and have some coffee, or do whatever you need to do: Veterans Day is here tomorrow.
