Jurassic World’s Not-So-Subtle Critique Of Defense Contracting

The moment Vic Hoskins (Vincent D’Onofrio) saunters over Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) in “Jurassic World” and gushes over the potential of Grady’s raptors, it’s clear where this is heading: Hoskins want to use the raptors that Grady works with for military operations. Yeah, that’s the million dollar idea. Grady, a Navy veteran and dinosaur-taming reincarnation of Steve Irwin, says no dice at first, but eventually comes around when Indominus Rex — a genetically engineered killing machine — escapes.

Predictably, Hoskins’ vision to use the dinosaurs’ killing power in the service of America’s military — and so that he cash in on a fat defense contract — fails, horribly. It makes you wonder if there’s not some not-so-subtle message embedded in the film about our weapons destroying us.
