Zachary Bell and Jay Blancas never intended to be a voice for the military and veteran communities. They simply thought it would be funny to stand on the side of the road with a cardboard sign where they had written a phrase only a Marine would understand like, “Take Motrin, drink water, change your socks.” But they soon found that these subtle, humorous nods to shared experiences were actually cathartic for many post-9/11 veterans like themselves.
