I think a lot about the way America perceives modern veterans. As a 24-year-old, spry, youthful, and energetic veteran Marine and Afghan War veteran, it's a part of my identity, a part of my future.

So today, out of curiosity, I searched the word “Veteran” on Google Images. Logged out. Incognito.

And lo and behold, among patriotic graphics and clip-art, here's what popped up in the top results:

With absolutely no disrespect intended to this man who I'm certain served our country honorably and bravely, this is the oldest person I've ever seen in my entire life.

2.4 million Americans served in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past 12 years. And we're coming home. As we talk about veterans who have fought or died for this country, let's remember and honor the past, but also look to the future.
