In his first message to the Army since being sworn in as its new chief of staff on Aug. 14, Gen. Mark Milley said that combat readiness is the service’s main concern.

“Our fundamental task is like no other – it is to win in the unforgiving crucible of ground combat,” wrote Milley. “We must ensure the Army remains ready as the world’s premier combat force. Readiness for ground combat is – and will remain – the U.S. Army’s #1 priority.”

In addition to keeping the force in a state of readiness so it can step into combat on solid footing, Milley also prioritized keeping the Army agile and adaptive, and to care for its soldiers.
