The revelations of plagiarism at the Army War College that forced Montana Senator John Walsh to drop out of his campaign were provided by the National Republican Senatorial Committee, according to NRSC executive director Rob Collins. The July report doomed Walsh’s already troubled campaign, and led to the War College stripping him of his master’s degree.

Collins told the Politico Playbook lunch on Thursday that the NRSC spent a quarter-million dollars on opposition research in 2013 alone, targeting not only Democratic opponents, but vetting Republican candidates as well. The researcher who discovered the plagiarism, Mark McLaughin, was also responsible for the 2011-2012 evidence of now Senator Elizabeth Warren's exaggeration of her Indian heritage.
