A collection of images from the Washington Post’s Checkpoint blog highlight the campaign by Iraqi soldiers and Shiite militiamen to retake the city of Tikrit — which began a month ago — and many hope this will mark a turning point in the fight to oust ISIS from Iraq.

According to another article published by the Washington Post, “The recapture of Tikrit, about 110 miles northwest of Baghdad, would constitute the first time that Iraqi security forces have wrested back a major population center from the militant group, boosting hopes for an offensive targeting the larger city of Mosul.”
