The second trailer for Top Gun: Maverick just dropped, and it’s everything we hoped and dreamed for.

Scheduled to hit theaters in 2020, we already knew that the sequel to the 1986 classic would see Tom Cruise return to the cockpit as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, this time as a Navy captain behind the stick of an F/A-18 Hornet, and the new two-minute trailer does not disappoint in delivering some great shots of Cruise pushing his aircraft to the limit.

The trailer opens with Maverick’s introduction to new students of the Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program with a simple, foreboding line: “What he has to teach you could mean the difference between life and death.” The camera then lands on Val Kilmer as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky and a mustache-wearing Miles Teller as Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of Nick “Goose” Bradshaw.

We then cut to Jon Hamm as an unnamed Navy three-star welcoming Maverick back to work.

“I have to admit, I wasn’t expecting an invitation back,” Maverick smiles before he gets his response: “They’re called orders.”

Oh yes, Maverick, it’s true: we’re never letting you go. While the trailer is clearly designed to introduce us to the next generation of naval aviators, it’s as much a torch-passing as it is a wild, brilliant taste of nostalgia that features references to the original 1986 film from a turbulent dogfight to sassy game of beach sports.

If anything, the trailer indicates that Top Gun: Maverick isn’t just a sequel, but a tribute to Maverick’s time in the cockpit, a promise that by the time the credits roll, you will have absolutely felt that need for speed … or, at least, that loving feeling.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Top Gun: Maverick hits theaters on June 26, 2020.
