That’s a question that occurred to me when I read an article about an Air Force captain who went on the lam from Albuquerque some 35 years ago. He recently was found in California.
We read a lot about enlisted going over the hill in wartime. But I also remember reading about pilots who intentionally flew into Switzerland or Sweden during World War II, having grown sick of the war. (By the way, the Swiss apparently were pretty rough about it — they put Allied fliers into internment camps where, if I recall correctly, conditions were far worse than in German PoW camps.)
