A U.S. service member was killed and another wounded on Monday during an apparent insider attack in eastern Afghanistan, defense officials announced, the sixth American service member killed in Afghanistan this year and the second insider attack in as many months.

  • The wounded service member is in stable condition, NATO’s Resolute Support said in a statement.
  • The Pentagon has not yet identified the fallen or wounded service members pending next of kin notification.
  • The incident comes less two months after Army Cpl. Joseph Maciel was killed during an apparent insider attack in southern Afghanistan on July 7.
  • “The sacrifice of our service member, who volunteered for a mission to Afghanistan to protect his country, is a tragic loss for all who knew and all who will now never know him,” said Resolute Support and U.S. Forces – Afghanistan commander Gen. Scott Miller in a statement. “Our duty now is to honor him, care for his family and continue our mission.”
