An airman assigned to Dyess Air Force Base in Texas was shot and killed during an incident involving a police officer on Saturday morning, the Abilene Police Department said.
- The incident unfolded after police responded to a 911 call from a senior NCO at Dyess AFB reporting that an airman was harming himself, Abilene Police Chief Stan Standridge said in a Saturday press conference.
- According to Standridge, officers who arrived at the airman’s residence observed him armed with a rifle and handgun inside, forcing police to withdraw and establish a perimeter.
- The airman “ultimately pointed his rifle toward police several directions, in addition to setting up trash cans as to act as a shield and base,” according to local NBC News affiliate KRBC.
- The airman was eventually shot by an Abilene police supervisor after leveling his rifle at surrounding officers. The airmen then fatally shot himself in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.
- The Abilene Police Department, Air Force Office of Special Investigations, and Texas Rangers are all investigating the shooting.
